Nordcurrent’s Chains of Freedom delivers a thrilling turn-based tactical adventure on the PlayStation 5, drawing inspiration from iconic games like XCOM and Mutant Year Zero. In this review, we’ll uncover how it crafts its unique narrative and gameplay experience.
Set in a dystopian vision of Eastern Europe, Chains of Freedom immerses players in a world haunted by the dreaded EDEN outbreak. You’re at the helm of an elite military squad, issued orders from the Sovereignty to solve a pressing mystery before catastrophe unfolds. This turmoil began years prior when an asteroid slammed into Earth, releasing EDEN crystals that drove humans into bloodthirsty, monstrous mutations.
Fortunately, the Sovereignty emerged, stabilizing chaos and developing a serum against the EDEN crystals’ effects. Yet, not everyone welcomed this control, sparking rebellion and the construction of a new regime. Having enjoyed titles like Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden and Miasma Chronicles, I was eager to explore what Chains of Freedom had in store.
The game offers three difficulty levels to accommodate various playstyles: Story, Adventure, and Challenge. Opting for Story mode allows a focus on the narrative with a lessened combat struggle. Adventure mode delivers a balanced challenge, while the aptly named Challenge mode tests seasoned players with intense combat scenarios, requiring timely execution and strategy.
Navigating each environment requires skillful use of the controls, where the left stick guides movement while the right stick adjusts your view. Interactions, running, character switching, and inventory management are all at your fingertips, enabling strategic preparation for the challenges ahead.
In combat, make swift decisions about moving or spending Action Points (AP) on powerful abilities. Each turn refreshes your AP, encouraging tactical use of your skills. Characters boast unique abilities like Fidel’s debilitating Uppercut or Corgan’s vigilant Overwatch, which can decisively alter battle outcomes.
Strategic cover is crucial—evasion depends on how protected your position is. Enemy reinforcements and tactical positioning add layers of complexity, challenging you to adapt swiftly.
As you trek through these desolate lands, gather supplies for crafting items that can turn the tide in engagements. New crafting recipes open as you progress, broadening your arsenal and options on the battlefield. EDEN Biocrystals serve as powerful upgrades, enhancing stats or bestowing potent effects, albeit with potential drawbacks.
Chains of Freedom also includes a comprehensive trophy list, inspiring players to delve deeper into its challenges. Whether you’re using Corban’s Overwatch to thwart foes or equipping your squad with EDEN crystals, each achievement brings you closer to the coveted Platinum trophy.
Launching today on the PS5, Chains of Freedom presents an engrossing tactical experience with its rich sci-fi narrative and strategic gameplay elements. Combatting the mutant threat and uncovering the game’s layered mysteries offers a riveting adventure for any strategy enthusiast.
