Dynasty Warriors: Origins is an absolute gem in the series, taking the thrilling hack-and-slash RPG experience to a new level amidst the backdrop of China’s legendary Three Kingdoms period. As a soldier cloaked in mystery, you embark on a journey to reshape China’s destiny. In my review, I could barely contain my excitement about this being my top pick of the series, and I’m not alone in that sentiment.
Just last weekend, Dynasty Warriors: Origins hit a remarkable milestone with nearly 70,000 players all engaging in the action at the same time. To put that into perspective, the last four games in the series struggled to pull in over 3,900 concurrent players. That’s more than 17 times the player count seen in the previous releases!
In a tweet, Alejandro from Game Discover Co shared a graph showcasing Origins’ unparalleled success. It’s not just breaking records within its own series; it’s also the second-largest launch of any game in Koei Tecmo’s catalog on this platform. [Image credit: Future via Michael Hoglund]
Dynasty Warriors: Origins vs. Wo Long
While Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty still holds the record for the largest Koei Tecmo launch ever, the company is likely celebrating Origins’ success even more. Despite Wo Long’s launch, it currently sits at a mixed Steam rating with only 47% approval. Meanwhile, Origins boasts a stellar 94% approval rating, translating into steady sales figures.
Although there are 6,000 fewer concurrent players compared to Wo Long, it’s hard to believe that Wo Long was more profitable on Steam, especially considering Steam’s lenient return policy, which probably led to a number of Wo Long refund requests. But this isn’t about undermining Wo Long’s achievements—over 3.8 million players in two months is impressive. The real story here is the remarkable success of Dynasty Warriors: Origins, breathing new life into a beloved yet niche franchise.
Here’s what some players have to say about their experience with Origins:
"It’s been quite a long while since I actually enjoyed Dynasty Warriors. This is an excellent step forward for the series and feels like a fresh start without abandoning everything that made the previous titles fun. Very interested to see how they build on this one."
— Lothair Mantelar"I’m not entirely sure how they made the officer fights feel like Ghost of Tsushima while the crowds feel like a Warriors game, but they pulled it off. Best Warriors game in years, as a fan of the genre."
— Ackman"They could’ve easily crapped out another Dynasty Warriors game, and I still would’ve liked it, but instead, they opted to make a really, really good one. Definitely one of my favorite trends in gaming. From gameplay to voice acting, everything is just better. I do miss the days of Cow Cow, though. RIP Cow Cow, you were a real one."

As someone who’s already shared my enthusiasm for Origins, I can’t help but gush even more. This game is the breath of fresh air the franchise needed. Whether you’re in it for the rich storyline or the technological marvel of engaging thousands of foes on screen, you’ll find it all in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. If you’re a fan of the Warriors-style games, do yourself a favor and dive into what is surely my standout pick for 2025.
