With word swirling around for months, the news is finally official: MultiVersus will be going offline on May 30, 2025, marking the end of its next season. The game, which first saw the light of day on May 28, 2024, allowed players to dive into the universe of beloved Warner Bros. characters, all in a free-to-play fighting format. From DC superheroes to Looney Tunes favorites, the roster was nothing short of a pop culture smorgasbord.
Yet, the realm of live-service games isn’t for the faint-hearted, and it seems MultiVersus has met the same challenging fate as other big-budget titles like XDefiant. Despite the initial excitement, especially noted during early access in July 2022 and again at its full launch, the game struggled to retain players over time. This struggle has resulted in heavy financial losses for Warner Bros., reaching over $100 million by late 2024. And so, Player First Games has reluctantly decided to pull the plug.
According to an announcement made on the MultiVersus website, the game will bid farewell to its online features once Season 5 concludes on May 30, 2025, precisely at 9 AM PST or noon EST. Not only will the servers go dark, but the game will also be removed from digital shelves on consoles and PC. Warner Bros. Games described this decision as being made after “careful consideration.” Starting January 31, players won’t be able to spend real money in the game anymore, though they can still use their in-game currency or tokens to access content until the season closes.
Even though online support is ending, there’s a silver lining: MultiVersus will still be playable offline. Fans can continue to enjoy single-player sessions against AI or team up in co-op modes, provided they’ve downloaded the game’s latest version and logged in at least once before the end of Season 5, which kicks off on February 4.
As the curtain falls, anticipation builds for the final season update arriving next week. It promises new content, with Aquaman and Lola Bunny leading the charge as unlockable rewards. If you’ve been on the fence about checking out MultiVersus, this upcoming update might just be the perfect reason to dive in and secure your offline copy.
MultiVersus has certainly showcased an impressive lineup. From the likes of Bugs Bunny and Batman to Arya Stark and Rick Sanchez, each character brought their own flair and special moves that spiced up battles. With a variety of iconic maps and ever-expanding arenas, the experience was designed to be nothing if not dynamic. Modes offered something for everyone, whether you craved the intensity of 1v1 duels or the chaos of four-player melees. Plus, a new PvE mode showcased endless combat possibilities. Supporting full cross-play and cross-progression, MultiVersus aimed to bring together diverse gaming communities.
Released on August 15, 2022, and rated T for Teen due to mild fantasy violence and language, MultiVersus was a labor of love by Player First Games. As its online chapter draws to a close, the game will continue living on through its dedicated offline players.
