In recent days, after numerous reports surfaced, Ayaneo removed an announcement from its Ayaneo Flip Indiegogo page that initially led many to speculate that the handheld devices were being completely discontinued. However, a new update from Ayaneo clarifies that this isn’t the case for the Ayaneo Flip KB and Flip DS, despite the initial post’s rather alarming tone.
To set the record straight, Ayaneo made some important clarifications. The production halt of the Ayaneo Flip series occurred after they had already fulfilled 98% of their crowdfunded orders, leaving just a small batch of 18 orders outstanding. Because of this, options for refunds or trade-ins, which we previously discussed, are still in play.
What’s crucial to note is the Ayaneo Flip series is still alive and kicking. Ayaneo has committed to manufacturing a few hundred more Flip units over the next three months and affirmed that “the Flip series will continue,” hinting at potential future versions like the Flip DS 2 and Flip KB 2. Given the existing market of foldable or slidable keyboard gaming devices, it might be wise for Ayaneo to hone in on the Flip DS model, though that’s just a personal take.
This news is particularly positive for those who were keen on the Ayaneo Flip but preferred a retail release over backing the crowdfunding campaign. Thankfully, a retail release still appears to be on the horizon through a “limited restock plan.” However, the exact launch date for these restocked units hasn’t been shared yet. Considering the buzz this campaign has generated, it’s likely the units will sell out rapidly once they’re available.
Ideally, these units will reach enthusiastic gamers rather than scalpers looking to profit. The unique design and robust performance of both the Ayaneo Flip KB and Ayaneo Flip DS stand out amid the current gaming handheld landscape, so seeing them get another shot before the inevitable next editions roll out is encouraging.
For the 18 backers still awaiting their units, a decision needs to be made between accepting a refund or opting for a trade-in for another Ayaneo device. This decision must be made by March 27, assuming the previous communication is still applicable. Ayaneo assures that they have reached out to the affected backers to sort this out.
