The excitement around the 2025 Oscar nominations is finally here, with films like Emilia Pérez, Wicked, and The Brutalist at the forefront, while crowd favorites like The Substance and Dune: Part Two are also making their mark.
After a series of delays, mostly due to the LA fires in early January, the Academy has at last announced the nominees, with Bowen Yang from Wicked and Rachel Sennott of Bottoms revealing the names on Thursday, January 23.
Despite a flood of mixed opinions online, Emilia Pérez has really captured the Academy’s attention, securing an impressive 13 nominations. Wicked: Part 1 and The Brutalist follow closely with 10 nods each. Conclave and A Complete Unknown aren’t far behind, each grabbing eight nominations. Meanwhile, other big hits like Anora, The Substance, and Dune: Part Two have managed to secure crucial spots after some uncertainty about their potential impact on this year’s selection. The success of The Substance might catch some off guard due to the Academy’s historically tricky relationship with horror.
