Recently, the leaders of NVIDIA and AMD have made swift visits to Japan, as both companies are keen on tapping into the country’s burgeoning AI market.
As Japan positions itself as a prime investment location for AI technology, both NVIDIA and AMD are vying for a substantial presence in the region. Japan is eager to become a leader in AI and is actively encouraging major tech firms to invest in the development of AI infrastructure. This effort was underscored by trips from Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, and Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, highlighting Japan as a strategic focus for AI firms aiming to expand their influence.
According to Bloomberg, during his visit, Jensen Huang discussed with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba the necessity of boosting electricity generation to accommodate the surge in AI demands. The discussions emphasized how Japan, with its strong background in robotics and industrial production, could spearhead AI advancements. In a gesture of goodwill and intent, Huang presented the Prime Minister with a DGX Spark AI supercomputer, underscoring NVIDIA’s dedication to supporting Japan’s AI goals.
NVIDIA is currently navigating challenges in maintaining its substantial market share in China due to new US export regulations and heightened competition. With these obstacles in mind, seeking alternative markets is crucial. Japan, with its robust R&D capabilities and ambition to lead globally in AI, appears to be a promising option for NVIDIA.
Lisa Su from AMD also took a trip to Japan, meeting with top government officials and local partners. Although the specifics of her visit are not fully disclosed, there’s speculation that Japan is particularly interested in fostering stronger ties with AMD as part of its AI developmental strategies. This indicates a competitive landscape shaping up between NVIDIA and AMD as they both seek to firm up their presence in Japan.
Clearly, the push for a prominent role in Japan’s AI market is underway, with both NVIDIA and AMD eager to establish themselves as key players in this evolving space.
