When I first heard that a team of former developers from big names like Call of Duty, Halo, Destiny, and Apex Legends were joining forces to create something new, my mind instantly went to a fast-paced, action-packed shooter set in a futuristic world. So, I was honestly surprised when Covenant turned out to be something akin to Dark Souls, but in the realm of FPS. While that description simplifies it a bit, it captures the essence. After catching its latest showing at the Galaxies Showcase, I can confidently say that Covenant looks incredibly promising.
FPS fans will soon get their dark fantasy fix with Doom The Dark Ages, and if my early impressions hold up until its launch, we’re in for a treat. Painkiller, a beloved classic, is making a comeback with a similar thrilling experience this year as well. Adding to this exciting lineup is Covenant, bringing robust, gritty combat in hauntingly atmospheric landscapes.
Developed by Legion Studio, which is teeming with FPS expertise, Covenant delivers an arsenal of massive machine guns alongside bows and crossbows. But to maintain that soulslike vibe (even in a first-person format), the game offers plenty of melee combat, beautifully highlighted in the new trailer. Picture this: an epic duel with longswords, a giant stag’s antler repurposed into a club-bow combo, and the joy of sending foes airborne to strike them with an arrow mid-flight. You can even channel your inner Thor by hurling a hammer that crashes into enemies, creating a spectacular shockwave and an immensely satisfying clang. And yes, Doom enthusiasts, a chainsaw weapon makes a very welcome appearance.
In addition, the game showcases the clever use of environmental elements. One standout moment is when a pot is flicked into the air, only to be karate-kicked into an enemy. There’s also a sweeping leg move that sends opponents sprawling. For a game inspired by the soulslike genre, the movement and dodging are impressively agile and engaging.
What truly stands out in Covenant is its combat versatility. This latest look reaffirmed my initial impressions from its reveal trailer, especially regarding its darkly captivating aesthetic. The variety of weapons, enemy types, formidable bosses, and gloomily majestic environments are very much in line with the vibes of the Souls series or Lords of the Fallen.
Unfortunately, what I was hoping to see—a demo or an official release date—remains elusive. Covenant is still at the “check out this awesome trailer and add me to your wishlist” phase. But with Doom The Dark Ages and the revival of Painkiller nearing release, I’m willing to wait a bit longer.
