Valve isn’t launching a brand new Steam Deck iteration just yet, but fans of this popular gaming handheld have something exciting on the horizon. A fresh release is about to hit the shelves—introducing the limited edition Steam Deck OLED in a sleek white finish.
This special version, known as the “Steam Deck OLED: Limited Edition White,” carries all the same specifications as the 1TB model, but adds a unique flair at a slightly higher price of $679. Expect to see this version available for purchase starting Monday, November 18.
This isn’t just a simple color swap. Along with the sophisticated white and gray design, you’ll receive a matching white carrying case and a microfiber cleaning cloth, giving it a more high-end feel.
Valve has ventured into color variations before. Remember the Steam Deck OLED with its limited edition smoky translucent shell? It was a hit, although it had its hiccups, like the tendency for tiny cracks. This time, Valve is aiming for more widespread availability of the white Deck across markets like the US, Canada, Europe, and newly added regions like Australia and select Asian countries through their partner, Komodo. They’re carefully distributing stock “proportionally” to ensure a fair spread.
To tackle the issue of resellers, Valve has put some measures in place. Each account can only order one white Steam Deck, and your Steam account must show at least one purchase made before November 2024 to qualify.
Valve hinted that this limited edition not only spices up their lineup but also serves as a test. According to them, “We’re curious to see what the response is, and will use what we learn to inform future decisions about any potential new color variants down the line.”
If you’re set on having a white Steam Deck but miss out on this limited edition, don’t worry. Companies like Jsaux and dbrand offer alternative backplates or skins to match your preferences. But if you want the official version straight from Valve, act fast before they sell out.
Looking ahead, Valve has teased more than just colorful updates. The company is committed to ongoing software improvements and is actively working on the next steps for the Steam Deck and other hardware innovations.
From the images I’ve seen, this white version has a certain nostalgic appeal, somewhat reminiscent of a cross between a Wii U and an iPod, which I mean in the best way possible. It’ll be interesting to see if this fresh look convinces current Steam Deck users to make another purchase.
