Sony has finally weighed in on the lawsuit filed by Christopher Barrett, a former Bungie employee.
In its legal response, detailed by Game File, Sony shared text messages between Barrett and several female employees at Bungie. The company claims these messages expose a consistent pattern of inappropriate behavior.
Barrett parted ways with Bungie in March 2024 after allegations surfaced about his conduct towards female colleagues. He has since taken legal action, arguing wrongful termination and seeking $200 million in damages, alleging his exit deprived him of $45 million linked to Sony’s acquisition of Bungie in 2022.
Sony maintained that Barrett was dismissed because he allegedly targeted a junior female employee with whom he had no direct working relationship. Initially engaging in what seemed like friendly exchanges, Barrett reportedly crossed professional boundaries, gradually making remarks about her appearance and indicating romantic interest. Sony claims he sought an unprofessional level of intimacy with these women.
Included in Sony’s court filing are excerpts from text messages and direct communications purportedly sent by Barrett to his victims.
In response, Barrett’s legal team, speaking to Game File, accused Sony of selectively presenting messages and conversations, framing Barrett in a negative light to justify what they call an unjust firing. The lawyers argued that Sony failed to provide complete messages or all context, lacking a sound legal reason for dismissing Barrett.
Barrett remains determined, stating that once all evidence is unveiled, it will prove Sony’s efforts to oust him and deny the equity he’d earned through 25 years of service.
